Sustainable Living Expo – here we come

Last Sunday was another super Sunday Session, and it was great to have Chris and Chelsea with us.

We’ve got a load of bikes ready for the Sustainable Living Expo this coming weekend and we’d love to see you there.

We also plan to have some auctions throughout the Saturday and Sunday so if you’re interested in getting on the road with a super HBK bike come along and have a look.

Anything we raise from the weekend will help us to get some more tools and parts etc… so that you’re able to come to Bike Kitchen and get involved with building the bike that’s just right for you. Whether it’s for the quick trips around the neighbourhood or your around Australia tourer (go Danny!) you’ll be able to create what you need.

We still need some more friends of Hobart Bike Kitchen to help us man the site over the weekend, if you can help please get in touch at hobartbikekitchen@gmail.com

Andy is also involved in the AppleLand a exhibition of  pictures that have been salvaged from McRobies Gully Waste Management Centre in South Hobart, Tasmania by Resource Work Cooperative.

Sunday Session 18/10

This Sundays Session was the best yet.

More bikes were completed for the Sustainability Expo. We had people along learning skills and building up their bikes, people coming along to find frames and parts and amazing people donating their time and their stuff to Hobart Bike Kitchen. Thanks to everyone involved!

A Special shout out goes to Rodger Willows whose donations nearly doubled the amount of bikes we have as well as including boxes of parts and tools! We are still sorting through what we received (and trying to fit it all in our Shed!) No doubt his generosity will let us help heaps of people onto their bikes this coming summer.

To those of you who have contacted HBK about donations, thank you and we will try to get in touch with you tomorrow. Its a very busy time for all the volunteers at HBK and pickup of your donations is complicated by the fact I’ve finally  gotten rid of my ute and therefore am in the enviable position of being car free. We will organise something with you soon. Thanks for your patience.

With all the bikes and action happening at the HBK headquarters, we are fast running out of storage space. Long-term we are always interested in any offers of a secure space closer to the Hobart CBD. If you have any information about any unused space, please hit us up.

Sadly, there won’t be a Sunday Session next weekend(25/10)  as some key members will be unavailable. So we hope to see you all the weekend afterwards.

A lovely Sunday forecast this week so we are hoping to get a big crew along to this Sunday Session.


When: 1pm till Dark this Sunday

Another weekly sunday session where anybody can come along to get advice, source parts and advice. You can maintain your steed or get it back on the road. Most of all it is about having a chat and meeting fellow bike riders.

Those feeling generous with their time can help us service and build our project bikes which we are currently getting ready for auction at our stall at the sustainability expo in a few weeks. Time is catching up with us!

Bike Ride have just come through and gotten us a good deal on some consumable parts such as gear and brake lines. More Tires and tubes are also on the way.

I’ll make sure to have a cook up to keep the bike chefs happy. Beverages will also be supplied.
So make the most of a nice forecast and spend some time this sunday in the sun. It would be great if we could get a few people along this week.

Tasmanian Mountain Bike Plan – Last chance for public comment

Sport and Recreation Tasmania (SRT) released the draft Tasmanian Mountain Bike Plan for public viewing in September. Interested groups and individuals have until 11 October 2009 to provide comments to the consultants preparing the plan.

Ride To Work Day – 1 Week To Go

Hopefully you saw the earlier post for Ride To Work Day 2009.

It’s one week to go and it would be great to have all the Bike Kitchen supporters at the Mawson Place breakfast.

We’re going to have a small display with the great video from Liam and Katie and some of the photos from the site and others.

We can give you the details of our next session as there is plenty to do before the Sustainable Living Expo.

We don’t have a concrete meeting time, but we generally open the kitchen up to anyone interested on Sunday afternoons. If you are interested in any part of it, email us at hobartbikekitchen@gmail.com .

We also gave a HBK discussion group you can subscribe to hobartbikekitchen@googlegroups.com. It’s a managed group so we will need to approve membership but that’s just a formality which we’ll do as soon as possible.

Sustainable Living Expo – Nov 7-8

We’ve been asked if we can put together a stand for the Sustainable Living Expo in early november organised by Sustainable Living Tas. It seems to be a pretty big deal and could be the perfect lauchpad for HBK into the wider Hobart community.

As coordinating cyclist, I’ve put some ideas to the SL people that they like – namely interactive workshop time and live auctions of bikes that we have built up.

2 things:

1. if you are keen on helping out on that weekend then be in touch
2. If you know of any way of getting hold of a marquee or something similar then be in touch.
and a 3rd. the bikes we are building in the next few weeks will go toward this and are very important to the future of HBK, so get excited and come along to Sunday Sessions to push things forward.
