The Mawson Place breakfast saw Lance, Steve and Sam dishing out some bike care and having a chat with many of morning crowd to spread the good word of Bike Kitchening.

But that wasn’t enough for Lance, he had his long bike loaded and so he fitted in an afternoon session for the travellers heading up the South Hobart Rivulet track and setup a mini session there between 5-6pm.

He provided oil or air to about 10 people, and chatted to about another 5-10 about stuff. Which, I’m sure you’ll agree, made it a highly succesful bike hour!

Thanks very much Lance for taking the HBK message to the streets, but also for a terrific lesson in bike packing.

We’re getting out party pieces ready for the upcoming Sustainable Living Expo which is on 5-6 November 2011.

You can have a look at the bikes that we’ll for the auction. This year the plan is to have the bike auction only on the Sunday so that you’ll get the chance to browse on both days if that suits you, or just come on Sunday and check out the bikes for yourself.

This is our once a year fund raiser and ensures we can keep providing wonderful bikes back to the community in a way everybody can be part of.

If you’ve got some time to help in preparing the bikes, it could be as simple as giving one the clean and polish it needs to look it’s Sunday best, we’d love you to come along to a Sunday Session and join us.

If you’re looking for a bike that’s a little bit special that’s ready to go this is the opportunity that only comes along once a year.

Well, add one more to the list – Finishing a HBK session after 5 o’clock. After a spiritual afternoon giving the people of Hobart all the bike learning our bones had to offer, the skies darkened and we realised the error of our ways, the witching hour was here and there was no stopping it. While we had busied ourselves with work the whispers of night had crept into our very minds and now compelled us to new tasks.

So by the light of a bicycle chain oil lamp, we set about the city inserting spoke cards, repairing tyres and correcting the braking clearances of any innocent bicycle left alone.

At least thats what I heard.

Some people say it never happened.

So we’re expanding the use of our Google group to share ideas and keep in touch with you a bit more than just the weekly advice on the Sunday Sessions.

You’ve been invited to Hobart Bike Kitchen

Hi everyone,

we here at the Hobart Bike Kitchen have been happily working away at recycling bikes and donating them for about 18 months now, and we are soon planning on undergoing a bit of change. We really want to keep growing and keep getting better but we need more help!

One of the things that the core group of organisers would really really like is to get a few more people actively involved with discussions, decisions and organisation of the kitchen.

As a first step to this, I’m inviting everyone to join our online discussion group. At present there are a very few of us who use this, but its a valuable way to start getting some broader discussions about the directions that we are heading and how we are going to actually get enough help to be able to keep getting bigger and better.

I understand that there are probably only a few of you on this list who would like to take this extra step, but rather than send this invite only to people whose names I know, I thought it would be much better to make it an open invite – after all, coops are all about community and sharing, not about having a small core group of managers…

If you would like to join up, please do so and over the next couple of weeks I’ll make a real effort to approve membership requests as they come in. Have a look at our past discussions to see how we run, and start making some input when you want!
